Shipbreaker [Audio Book]
by Paolo Bacigalupi
[8 sound discs (9 hr., 11 min.); 326 pp ]

How often do you wonder what the future will be like? Shipbreaker presents a pretty grim picture. Nailor, a teenage boy, survives by working the light crew, scavenging grounded oil tankers which are being broken down for parts for enough copper wiring every day to make his quota. After a hurricane, he discovers a beautiful clipper ship which he thinks will be his salvation. But the ship has a lone survivor, a beautiful and wealthy girl who, if he rescues her instead of stripping the ship for all its worth, might lead him away from his dangerous and abusive father into a better life. He must choose wisely. I was engaged from the moment I started reading this book. Nailor is just one of many interesting characters that the author has created and you will love/hate them all!

The Monstrumologist [Audio Book]
by Richard Yancey
[10 sound discs (11 hr., 45 min.): ___ pp]

The Monstrumologist is not for the feint-hearted. Set in the late 1880’s, 12-year old Will Henry tells of his time when he apprenticed with Dr. Warthrop, a scientist who tracks and hunts real-life monsters. The doctor has been studying and hunting a specific pod of Anthropophagi, a beast that feeds on humans, for many years, only to discover that they are closer to home than he ever could have imagined. Will grows up fast as he does the doctor’s bidding and as he tries to understand his dead father’s role in bringing these beasts to America. At times, I didn’t want to listen any further as what I imagined was going to happen was going to be very gruesome. Listening to the book on tape gave it that extra edge, too. If you like monsters, you will enjoy this book, as it does keep you on the edge of your seat!

The Last Summer of the Death Warriors [Audio Book]
by Francisco X. Stork
[7 sound discs (8 hrs., 18 min.); 344 p]

I really enjoyed this book. Although Pancho has revenge in his heart and is planning on killing the man who murdered his sister, you still like the guy as he struggles with his decision. His life gets more complicated after he arrives at St. Anthony’s Home and is assigned to help D.Q, a boy who is dying of cancer. DQ tells Pancho of his ”Death Warrior’s Manifesto” about living life to its fullest. As Pancho tracks down his sister’s murderer, he becomes more involved in DQ’s life and falls under his influence as well as that of the beautiful girl who works at the Home. This book had some surprising plot developments and unusual characters. You’ll love it!

Heist society [Audio Book]
by Ally Carter
[1 sound mp3 player (6 hrs. 7 min.); 287 p]

This was a fun book to read and the first in a series. The main character, 15-year old Kat, is a professional international thief! She and her teenage friends combine their talents to steal some of the world’s most prized art objects. When Kat tries to go straight. she is drawn back into the Life and must pull of the biggest heist in history in order to save her father, who is apparently the number one suspect on Interpol’s list for stealing a priceless art collection from a powerful mobster. This is a fast-paced novel that has it all--adventure, mystery, suspense, and romance!

Dragonfly, 390 p
by Julia Golding

If you grew up loving fairy tales of knights in shining armor and high adventure, you will enjoy reading Dragonfly. This is a fantasy about a teenage couple who are forced to marry to politically join their two kingdoms. Tashi, the 16-year old Fourth Crown Princess of the Islands, dislikes her betrothed almost immediately. Eighteen-year old Ramil of Gerfal is nothing but a spoiled, egostical barbarian who insults her when they first meet. But when the two are kidnapped by a fearsome warlord who wants to start a war between the two kingdoms so he can control all the land, the two teens must deal with each other and their kidnappers. As they learn to respect the differences in their religion, culture, and political views, they uphold the traditional plot of opposites attract. The book is filled with subplots that make it an engaging read for all. Although somewhat predictable (after all, don’t all fairy tales have happy endings?), it still has enough romance, trickery, bloody fight scenes, and adventure to make it a compelling tale.

Incarceron [Audio Book]
by Catherine Fisher
[10 sound discs (11 hrs., 37 min.); 442 p]

It seems like everybody wants to write a fantasy book and turn it into a series. Well, add this book to your “must read” list. Incarceron is the name of a prison that has been sealed from the Outside for centuries. Finn, a seventeen-year-old prisoner who has no memory of his childhood and believes that he came from the Outside, wants to escape, even though most inmates don’t even believe that an Outside exists. When he finds a crystal key, he finds Claudia, who claims to live Outside and is the daughter of the Warden of Incarceron. Claudia wants to escape her arranged marriage and believes Finn can help her just as he believes she is his way out. The prison, however, has a mind of its own. I can’t wait to read the next book in this series!

Fat Cat [Audio Book]
by Robin Brande
[7 sound discs (8 hr., 22 min.); 330 p]

The old adage, “You are what you eat,” couldn’t be more true than in the pages of this book. Cat’s new high school science project is an experiment on herself. She must live and eat like our earliest human ancestors. So no more processed foods (goodbye, chips) or make-your-life-easier technology (goodbye, TV and car). Hello, healthy eating and walking everywhere. H-E-L-L-O, who’s that New Girl? The boys begin to notice Cat’s slimmer physique, but she can only think about—and hate--Matt Mckinney. Not only is this a great study on how girls feel about their bodies, but it provides excellent information about healthful eating and living—in a fun way!
If you are a girl, you must read this book. If you are a boy, you must also read this book—so you can better understand us girls!

The Grimm Legacy, 325 p
by Polly Shulman

Do you believe in magic? Elizabeth didn’t…until she got an after-school job as a page at a most unusual library, the “New-York Circulating Material Repository.” Instead of checking out books, though, this library lends out objects. When Elizabeth finally earns access to the secret room in the basement where the Grimm Collection of powerful, magical objects are locked away, weird things begin to happen and the real adventure begins. As I read this most unusual story, I began to wish that such a lending library really did exist.

Countdown (Audio Book)
by Deborah Wiles
[6 sound discs (440 min.); 377 p]

Of all the 2011 Lone Star Books I’ve read this year, this was my favorite! It took me on a nostalgic trip down memory lane back to the early 1960’s when I was a pre-teen just like the main character Franny Chapman, and the US was in the midst of the Cold War scare. I remember the bomb shelters people added to their homes, the fear of a nuclear attack during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the shocking assassination of JFK—events which are all a part of this historical fiction book. In Countdown, Franny has problems with her best friend, her crazy uncle tries to dig up the front yard, she misses her older sister who is mysteriously away from home, and she must cope with a budding romance…Ah, adolescence in the 1960’s. Read this book and you’ll be reading my life when I was your age!

Once the neuro headset arrives, Sam is able to control his computer without a keyboard, just by thinking! Soon Sam finds himself caught, incarcerated, freed, and then semi-imprisoned in a job where his computer skills are put to the test. Matched (Audio Book)
by Ally Condie
[8 sound discs (ca. 10 hr.); 369 p]

Is there truly a soul mate for each of us? Can there be more than one?
In a futuristic society, the odds are slim that the Officials will match a boy and a girl who already know each other. But the odds were in Cassia‘s favor when at the Matching Ceremony, her best friend Xander’s face is flashed upon the screen as her perfect mate. Later in the privacy of her own home, Ky Markham's face flashes on the screen for a split second. The Officials say it was just a glitch, but Cassie wonders. Soon her thinking about Ky turns into action, and Cassie begins to question everything she’s ever known about the autocratic Society in which she lives. This is book one in the Matched trilogy, and I can’t wait to read the next one!
